In the process of farewell meetings with Qatari officials at the end of his mission in Doha, Dehghani met with Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mohammed Al Khulaifi.
“After reviewing the measures taken and steps forward, I appreciated his role in promoting bilateral relations, particularly regarding the prisoner swap agreement, which we are in the final stages of its implementation,” he wrote in a post on X social network about the meeting.
On Tuesday morning, the Associated Press reported that the Biden administration has issued a waiver for banks to transfer $6 billion in frozen Iranian oil funds without fear of U.S. sanctions as part of an agreement with Iran.
Under the agreement reached last month, the Biden administration agreed to release Iranian frozen assets in South Korea and secure the release of five Iranian citizens detained in the United States in exchange for the release of five American agents detained in Iran.
Also, Reuters pointed to Qatar’s role in the negotiations and said that Doha hosted at least eight rounds of indirect talks involving Iranian and U.S. negotiators sitting in separate hotels speaking via shuttle diplomacy, with the earlier sessions focused mainly on the nuclear issue and the later ones on the prisoner releases.
