Iranian FM to depart for New York

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh announced that Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian will depart for New York on Monday to attend the UN General Assembly.

Speaking at a weekly press conference on Sunday, Khatibzadeh said, “During the visit, Hossein Amir Abdollahian will hold 45 meetings”.

Regarding the possibility of holding a meeting between foreign ministers of Iran and the P4+1 on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Khatibzadeh said, “No decision has been made yet and we should wait to see what the agenda will be. However, during the visit to New York, Hossein Amir Abdollahian will separately meet with foreign ministers of 4+1”.

He also emphasized that Iran has no plans to meet with US officials in New York.

The spokesman also added that the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi will deliver a speech online on the first day of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) on Tuesday.

Regarding the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit held on Friday, Khatibzadeh said that serious agreement was reach on several points on the situation in Afghanistan, including formation of an inclusive government and no foreign interference.

“Iran’s permanent membership in Shanghai Cooperation Organization will make the organization stronger,” he added.
